LaGrange headed to North Carolina for NCAA softball regional
LAGRANGE, Ga. - The LaGrange softball team will travel to Fayetteville, N.C. for the first round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Softball Championship. The Panthers (24-18) are seeded fifth in the seven-team regional hosted by Methodist University. The regional will use a double-elimination format.
The Panthers begin tournament play Thursday. The Panthers will face fourth-seeded Emory (28-10) at 10 a.m. The winner advances to play top-seeded Lynchburg (Va.) (36-5) at 4 p.m. Thursday. The loser drops to the loser's bracket beginning Friday at 10 a.m.
The rest of the regional includes second-seeded Christopher Newport (Va.) (33-8-1), third-seeded Methodist (34-10), sixth-seeded Ursinus (Pa.) (31-9) and seventh-seeded Neumann (Pa.) (27-12).
This the second year in a row the Panthers have travelled to Fayetteville for the regional. Last year, the Panthers lost 1-0 to Methodist and 2-0 to Salisbury.
The Panthers earned their NCAA bid by winning the GSAC tournament. Lynchburg is the Old Dominion champion, Christopher Newport the USA South champion, Ursinus the Centennial champion and Neumann the Pennsylvania Athletic champion. Emory and Methodist received at-large bids.
